HMS ILLUSTRIOUS CREW MEN AND WOMEN

The 50 HMS Illustrious crewmen & women who volunteered their time for the day when the British Navy aircraft carrier, docked at Vasco in Goa for a few days shore leave. In the past the crew had done community projects in the Caribbean, Sultanate of Oman and Africa.

The crew brought with them a huge amount of recyclable items for the children of the Children Walking Tall Charity which supports the children who either live in the slums or on the streets in Goa. There was also a dentist and medical staff who came to check the children's teeth and to patch up any sores or cuts.

The day was a huge success, the water tower grew by 5ft, a large football pitch was cleared at the back of the house and roof tiles were replaced and fixed. The main project and the children's favourite by far was the bamboo tree house which was named "HMS Mango".

The fifth HMS Illustrious
(R06) is an Invincible-class light aircraft carrier of the Royal Navy, affectionately known as 'Lusty' to her crew. The ship's motto is "Vox Non Incerta" which translates as "No Uncertain Voice".

The carrier set sail from Portsmouth,UK on 21 January 2008 as head of the multi-national task group Orion 08, which from January to May 2008 carried out exercises and diplomatic visits to twenty ports in the Mediterranean, Africa, the Middle East, and south-east Asia.
